Democracy in America is a compendium of Alexis de Tocqueville’s nine-month journey throughout America in 1831 and encapsulates the life and institutions of the evolving and flourishing American democratic society. Pioneering the field of Political Anthropology, Tocqueville studied American society and particularly its religious, political, and economic character. He was fascinated with egalitarianism in American society, compared to the rigid class system in Europe, and the dominance of liberal ideas, and believed this reflection (the America example) of the republican spirit to also be the future of European liberal society, in a post-revolutionary and post-monarchical age.

Its dominance, from its release to the present-day, as a reference in political, philosophical, sociological, and historical literature makes this enduring text an indispensable authority on democracy and mandatory for most political and sociological studies. IIST publishes, in parts, this Arabic-translated version of Tocqueville’s original text.
