ملخص الرواية
في بيته بالواحات، لا يستطيع الطفل أحمد التأقلم مع حياة والده المتزمة والمتدينة، يخرج إلى أطراف الواحة، يكتشف بني عيداس غجر الصحراء يرقصون ويشربون، ينجذب إلى تلك الحياة، يشرب معهم ويعود الى البيت مخمورا، فينال العقاب الشديد من والده، تبقى تلك الذكرى معه وبعد عودتة الغجر الى الواحة يفر معهم إلى أقاصي الصحراء البعيدة، يحب فتاة من بينهم وتختفي بطريقة غامضة يوم زفافهما، ينفصل عن الغجر وحين يعود الى قريته ينفى من والده الذي كان شيخا على المسجد. في منفاه يكتشف مدينة مختلفة، وامرأة تتقاطع دوائر حياته مع دوائر حياتها، وفي سن الخمسين يدرك أنها هي من كان يبحث عنها، إذ تجسدت فيها صورة الغجرية الأولى التي أحبها.

In his home in The Oases, the child Ahmed could not cope with the strict and religious life of his father. Once Ahmed was introduced the dancing and drinking life style of Eidas tripe, the gypsies of the desert, when he went out his oasis. He was attracted to that life, thus he started drinking with them and returned home drunk. His father punished him severely. That memory remains with him and when gypsies returned to the oasis, Ahmed run away with them to the far reaches of the desert. He loves a gypsy girl, but she mysteriously disappears on their wedding day. Thereafter, Ahmed decided to return to his village to be thrown to exile by his old father. In his exile he discovers a different city and meets another woman whose life circles intersect with the circles of his life. In his fifties, Ahmed realizes that she was the girl he was looking for as she embodied in the image of the first gypsy he loved.
