At critical moments in the history of nations, when the horizon of the future seems quite blurred, writers dig deep back into time to diagnose a once-upon-a-time mythic Past whose now fossilized map holds, enthralled, a limping, if not, myopic Present. Shawki Galal does just that in his extremely enlightening book, The Archeology of the Arab Mind, which turns out to be, rather, rewardingly, a social exploration of the manifold layers of Egyptian culture and psyche. The irking questions at the heart of Galal’s studious double digging are Why did the Arabs linger behind with their proud bundles of Islamic heritage while other nations lightly galloped the road of progress and civilization? Why can’t the Arabs face the sadly challenging reality that consumption has marginalized their existence, and that petrol and monuments are what tags them in the eyes of an amused and suspect world? Coupled with those questions is the unnerving speculation, if “we” were to disappear from the face of the earth, would the world lament the resultant vacuum? The archeological narrative of the past thus begins. From the cultural deadlock caused by neglecting the art of skepticism, to the existential stasis born out of a dominant metaphysical approach to life, to the general failure of critical and scientific thinking, and, finally, to the deterioration of socio-productive patterns of living, Galal lashes back at a decadent Arab mind.

Mournful at times, razor-sharp at others, Galal carefully cuts through a cultural complacency that has long turned “us” into a prey for “the Other”. His lens then tours the years that witnessed the “assassination” and “eradication” of the indigenous Egyptian character - from the Greco-Roman invasions to the Arab conquest of Egypt - tracing the Hermetic origin of its schizoid existence. The arduous digging finally brings Galal to the critical encounter between the cultural specificities of the EgyptianArab society and the global transformations of the Knowledge Society. Will the EgyptianArab mind make the leap from the culture of oral existence, of “mere utterance”, of “absolute, unquestioned convictions” into the culture of active being, of “the mind and the will”; the culture where knowledge is dynamically generated, created, invested and employed? Is a reshuffling of perspectives, a reorganization of the “mental infrastructure” of the EgyptianArab society a near possibility?

An invaluable socio-psychological treaty on the Arab mind, Galal’s book is a must read, for Arabs, Egyptians, and the Other.

رحلة أو تغريبة هى فى ظاهرها رحلة إلى أعماق النفس والتاريخ، إلا أنها تتجه معنى ودلالة إلى الحاضر والمستقبل بحثاً عن أسباب حالنا الراهنة، وعن العقل الاجتماعى الموروث الفاعل، وكذلك التساؤل عن كيف نبنى عقلاً جديداً ناقداً يدعم المسيرة الحضارية، ويحفز إلى النهوض تأسيساً على منطق الواقع في رحلة هدفها سبر أغوار العقل بحثاً عن كوامن خافية ثاوية فى الباطن تمثل بداية الحدث، ولكن تجلياتها واضحة فى الظاهر.. فاعلة مؤثرة وحاكمة تشكل ما يمكن أن نسميه بنية المعنى أو الإطار الثقافى الفعال الذى نرى من خلاله صورة الوجود، ويصوغ لنا طبيعة السلوك، ويضفى فى النفس شعوراً بالرضا والاكتفاء والانكفاء.

رحلة غايتها إجابة عن تساؤل كيف «نفكر» و«نعمل» فى حياتنا أفراداً وجماعات قانعين بثقتنا المطلقة فى رصيد ثقافى موروث بدلاً من بحث ودراسة ما يجرى من تغيير، وإيمان بمرجعية العقل العلمي؟ لماذا عاش الموروث أسطورة وتعطل الفعل والعقل الإبداعى وتعطل إنتاج فكر جديد؟

لماذا لا نعود إلى الموروث بعقل ناقد وشك بناء؟ لماذا ننكر على أنفسنا الحق فى بناء تراث جديد مثل كل المجتمعات حين تعبئ قواها الفكرية والمادية للنهضة؟

إن سهم الزمان لا يرتد إلى الوراء، ولا يثبت فى مكان، وإنما يمضى منطلقاً إلى أمام مخلفاً وراءه من تقاعسوا عن الشك الحافز إلى التجديد، و أقالوا العقل الناقد الإبداعى.

ولهذا.. الكتاب صوت نذير.
